Alan Baer CoffeeBreak Logistics

Last week, OL President, Alan Baer, spoke on everything from the future of the supply chain to what makes OL “local around the world” when he appeared on Coffeebreak Logistics – No Booking.

Coffeebreak Logistics – No Booking is a show on LinkedIn hosted by Jose Montoya, Vice President of Business Development & Marketing at Sigma Business Consulting. The program highlights different industry leaders and analyzes the latest issues in supply chain logistics.

Although the conversation featured glimpses into Baer’s past, it focused mainly on the current issues in the industry and how OL is navigating these rough seas. Here are four key takeaways from the discussion:

1.) Port Congestion to Extend Through

The holidays will contribute to further delays due to vacations and business closures. Baer believes congestion and backlogs will continue well into 2022 and possibly into 2023.

Early in the conversation, Baer and Montoya dove into a pressing question for businesses and consumers worldwide: what exactly will be available this holiday season?

Baer stated that cargo on the 80+ ships waiting outside the port of Los Angeles and Long Beach is unlikely to arrive in stores for Black Friday.

“We’ve had some ships that arrived around the 15th of October, and they are just berthing this week [11/15] onto the dock,” he said.

He elaborated that OL partners in China estimated that shipping capacity is operating at about 70% due to congestion, yet cargo volume is up around 30%.

2.) Trucker Shortage to Continue Through 2022

Limited capacity also extends to labor, where a truck driver shortage of over 80,000 drivers grips the United States. Montoya and Baer examined trucking’s current predicaments and the industry’s future.

Driver behavior changed since the onset of the pandemic, with many choosing routes closer to their homes and families. The trucking industry has an increasingly aging workforce and faces difficulty attracting younger drivers. But the need for trucking in the supply chain cannot be understated.

“That last mile is in a truck,” Baer said. “When you come right down to it, you can go to any store, and in the end, those goods showed up in a truck.”

Baer predicts that will become prominent in the long term. Immediately, however, trucking shortages are an obstacle that global logistics companies must face and address sooner rather than later.

What about coming up with adding more funds to pay drivers, afford clean trucks & fees, or a comprehensive plan to match up import empty returns to exports so we can avoid the ports? –Carrie Murphy [CCO – OL USA]

3.) US Infrastructure Problem: Investment Needed to Address Increasing Consumer Demand

Another topic the pair touched on is the lack of adequate infrastructure in the United States. President Biden recently signed his $1 trillion infrastructure bill into law. The bill’s funding will address a number of US infrastructure problems including clearing the backlog at ports and improving roads, bridges, and rail systems throughout the country.

This is the first large-scale investment in US infrastructure in decades. Yet experts agree that the funds are not sufficient to make the required improvements. The absence of necessary investment is part of the reason for many supply chain disruptions.

The boom in consumer demand in 2020, triggered by a shift to spending on goods, caught the neglected American supply chain and its infrastructure by surprise. Baer indicated that infrastructure at the ports, roadways, warehouses and other nodes along the supply chain path is underequipped, understaffed, and unprepared to handle such a rise in demand.

“This is the result when triple the demand meets historical two percent investment in infrastructure if you will,” Baer stated.

4.) Better Customer Service Requires a Personal Touch

When asked about OL’s tagline, “Local Around the World,” Baer highlighted what makes OL special: its personal touch. OL seeks to provide its customers with a local feel wherever they do business. Regional employees can supply the most up-to-date information and intricate knowledge of the areas where customers wish to import or export their goods.

“…it’s personal touch. OL seeks to provide its customers with a local feel wherever they do business. Regional employees can supply the most up-to-date information and intricate knowledge of the areas where customers wish to import or export their goods.” - Alan Baer, President of OL USA

OL USA is dedicated to growing its networks to preserve and expand its local expertise. As a company we move over 100,000 teus annually, our staff speaks over 17 different languages, and we have a network of over 140 agents covering 140+ countries. OL USA offers our clients a single-source experience from beginning to end, which is reflected in our 99% customer retention rate. Local, around the world has allowed OL the wherewithal during uncertain times to invest further as an organization and add 65 new hires so far in 2021.

“Clearly, as you travel around, there’s a difference; there are just different takes on how people speak to each other, how they interact,” Baer said. “No matter where your cargo is coming to or from, we are local even though we are sitting in Singapore, Sydney or Beijing; it didn’t matter at that point; you had the same feeling of localness about the organization.”

“No matter where your cargo is coming to or from, we are local even though we are sitting in Singapore, Sydney or Bejing; it didn’t matter at that point; you had the same feeling of localness about the organization.” - Alan Baer, President of OL USA

But at its core, it’s the company’s staff that provides that personal touch and extraordinary customer service. Baer emphasized his employee’s speed of response when corresponding with customers, their dedication to going the extra mile (even absorbing costs when something goes awry), and their ability to grow the company’s client base as the competition loses customers.

China Power Situation

Dear Friends,

Power Rationing is now underway in China, with production capabilities down by 40%!
Factories in at least ten Chinese provinces have either cut output or closed temporarily this month, after government-imposed power cuts to curb carbon emissions.

The flow of cargo into the origin terminals will quickly eliminate any backlog of freight now sitting waiting for space.

  • The lack of empty equipment should also be resolved over a shorter period.
  • Destination ports, ramps, terminals should start to clear up as well.

We will keep you updated as we learn  how this will change rates, space and equipment going forward.

If you have any questions, please contact your OL USA Account Manager for more information.

Thank you.

Town Hall Recap: The Case of the Traveling OL USA Library

At a Town Hall meeting last month, OL USA President Alan Baer spoke about the pandemic’s impact on the shipping industry and the company’s changing culture. He also surprised a few people when he announced plans to donate a portion of his library to any interested staff members. But while the announcement may have appeared strange to some new attendees, it thrilled Karina Gutierrez, an Import Specialist based in Long Beach.  She reached out and took Baer up on his offer.  “I sent him an email basically telling him what I like to read,” she said.

Alan’s Library

Baer’s bookshelf is an OL USA staple and towers over him in every meeting. He keeps it stacked with multicolored tomes on every topic imaginable and noted it is not all business – the collection includes cookbooks, spy thrillers, sports books among other classics.   “Books are written to be read and shared and not to sit on my shelf or in piles on the floor” Baer said.  When asked how it made him feel to fulfill the request he said,  “The books are better being read multiple times and hopefully we can pass them along inside or outside the company.”

Karina’s Office Space

One of the reasons Karina applied to work for Oceanwide Logistics in the first place was its remote work-from-home opportunities. When she first joined OL, she was so excited to start working from her home that she designed her own home office. The space most notably features bookshelves that Karina built by hand.  But despite her extensive collection, after construction she did not have enough books to fill all the shelves. When Baer offered portions of his library on the company’s town hall, Karina knew this was the perfect opportunity for her to fill them.

Culture Starts with Leadership

Karina is fluent in Spanish and currently learning Italian. She hopes to continue improving her skills in both languages by reading more.. Her favorite topics include nonfiction, poetry, world history, business, and language.  Gutierrez looks forward to receiving the books and even likened their arrival to Christmas. But on a deeper level, it showed her how much the leadership at OL USA cares about their employees.

“He’s not like this big boss on the top of a tall building and it’s hard for you to reach him as an employee, I think it’s a great way to show his employees, ‘this is me; this is my personality, and I am happy to provide whatever makes you successful while at OL USA.’”

Customer Advisory: Emergency Fee at the ports of LA and Long Beach

Terminal congestion at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have reached historical levels

The Biden Administration has announced that effective November 1st, 2021, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will begin charging an “emergency fee” on all long-dwelling cargo.

Both ports will begin charging Ocean Carriers an additional fee for import containers that have sat idle on the terminal for 9 days local delivery, and 6 days for rail cargo departing the port for inland location.

The cost is $100 per container on the first day past the set dwelling limit for terminal or rail and will increase by $100 increments for each day that follows (i.e., $200 for day 2, $300 for day 3, and so on).

As directed, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach will be responsible for collecting the fees. The revenue will be reinvested in long-term port efficiency and infrastructure programs that will help mitigate any future congestion challenges in the San Pedro Bay area.  Read JOC article

Congestion at US ports Continues

Los Angeles/Long Beach terminal operators have tempered hopes for 24/7 operations to mitigate congestion, claiming that they will not commit to round the-clock gates while 30% of existing appointment slots go unused. Providing round-the-clock service requires a costly extra shift, which does not earn back the investment.

Meanwhile, the Port of Oakland is calling on carriers to route more cargo via its facilities. It claims its berths are congestion-free and that carriers should reinstate services.

During January-September 2021, the main US West Coast ports saw their volumes go up by 17% over 9M20’s figures to 18.5 million TEU. They are also 10% higher than in 9M19. Full imports rose by an 17.2% to 9.2 million TEU, whilst full exports went down by 11.1% to 3.1 million TEU. Consequently, the number of empties was 37% higher than for the same period of 2020. Oakland is the only port where overall throughput did not go up by a double-digit percentage, although its imports grew by just over 10%.

PLEASANTON, Calif.May 12, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Blume Global, a leader in global logistics and digital supply chain solutions, today announced that OL USA, a non-asset based logistics provider for global freight, has launched OL MOVE, a comprehensive platform designed by Blume Global to deliver end-to-end visibility and increased business efficiency.

OL USA — as part of the Oceanwide Logistics Global Network — provides customers total door-to-door intermodal transportation and logistics across ocean, air, rail, and road. With agents in over 140 countries throughout the world, the company’s continued expansion called for the development of a custom-tailored portal. OL MOVE provides customers of all sizes continuous, granular status visibility, and customizable data analytics and reports, which are used to increase efficiency and make critical supply chain decisions.

As a leading developer of supply chain software solutions with an extensive intermodal network and more than 25 years of data insight, Blume Global was selected to design and implement a robust, transparent, evolving platform that leverages all customer data, consolidated on one intuitive portal.

With Blume Visibility, OL MOVE offers access to more detailed reports and consolidated logins for better visibility to customer data. For example, Blume Visibility provides advanced filtering options of over 20 criteria and the ability to run a report with up to 100 characteristics for one shipment – in 22 languages.

“We partnered with Blume to create a customer platform that is powerful enough to deliver true end-to-end visibility, alerts, and deep analytics critical to maximizing business efficiency,” said Alan Baer, President of OL USA. “In this unpredictable time, OL MOVE has functioned exactly as expected – a testament to Blume’s robust development and value as a reliable partner. The clear “First Mile/Last Mile” detail and shipment mapping have been key advantages as we work with customers to dynamically reroute and control cargo. We look forward to working together and growing our partnership.”

Since implementing Blume Visibility and leveraging Blume Accelerate, Blume Global’s implementation program, OL USA’s customers have gained the benefits of having a single, clear efficient platform and increased visibility. OL USA has received additional benefits since partnering with Blume, including increased functionalities to add a wider base of customers and eliminating manual data entry and offering automated shipment creation and tracking.

“The success and growth of our customers like OL USA is our top priority,” said Pervinder Johar, CEO, Blume Global. “Blume Visibility is providing companies with end-to-end shipment visibility, dynamically predicting ETAs and flagging exceptions. As the industry navigates the impact of COVID-19, our customers can be more proactive in the resolution of shipment disruptions, both planned and unplanned.”

Blume Visibility is one of several solutions within the Blume Universe. Blume Visibility shines a light on typically hidden areas in the supply chain, and provides clear visibility across every move, mode and mile — enabling every node to be a decision point through trading partner orchestration and data-driven recommendations.

With unparalleled network visibility and intelligent execution, Blume Visibility improves supply chain performance, resilience, agility, and responsiveness. End-to-end visibility enables organizations to flag exceptions and address changes in real-time and proactively resolve disruption
